How to pass a job interview with us
The following is an encore presentation of a blog from March, 2009. The blog was originally posted for the benefit of Co-Op candidates, but it certainly applies for candidates for music teacher, executive, staff, and administrative positions, as well.
How to pass our job interviews: If you have a job interview scheduled with us, read the follow tip sheet.
1. Do not apply if you have facial jewelry. Dress business-like and modestly. Our staffers' appearance code is consistent with that of Cadets Canada.
2. Make eye contact, offer a solid handshake, and be prepared to talk about interesting parts of your life. Don't even think of using profanity.
3. Prepare for the interview. We're easy to find in cyberspace. Read our studio policies to get an idea of the dress code for students because that will apply to you, too. Prepare to answer the following questions:
What do think this business is about? What do you know about this company? How does a music school operate?
Prepare to discuss your skills inventory (which is a current list of things you can do, not necessarily certificates or things you did years ago) and longer term goals (such as post-secondary education).
Prepare to discuss what initiative means. Any there any projects you wish to take on?
Prepare to discuss personal development. You might be asked about the most recent non-fiction book you've read or training outside of school.
You may be asked a question that merges IQ, general knowledge, and common sense. An example would be, "Approximately how many piano tuners are there in the world?" The actual answer's not that important, but we'd like to see your thought process. Another example would be, "if the price tag on a drum pad is $30 at our Ontario location, and the customer hands over a $50 bill, how much change is due?"
4. Language skills are a significant component of this business. You may be asked to correctly spell common words such as: rescheduling, Wednesday, Niagara Falls, calendar, registration, and commercial. You may also be asked to correct a written passage.
The expectations in a business interview are always changing, but the above tips are designed to create a win-win situation for the student and the studio.

Exam Certficate Ceremony on Tuesday, July 20
Parties are fun, aren't they? Let's have a party to celebrate the musical achievements of our exam candidates! Join us Tuesday, July 20 at Hugh Foster Hall in downtown Milton for our second annual Exam Certificate Ceremony. I'll keep the speeches brief so we can get to the cake and treats all the sooner. It's a great time for a photo op, a little social time, and maybe even a few questions about the exam system and the upcoming school year.
We're at Hugh Foster Hall this year because it seems we ran out of space at the studio last year. (Nice problem to have!)
The certificates are expected shortly, but even if they're delayed we'll have a photo op with a general certificate and enjoy the moment all the same. Any arguments against posing with a DISTINCTION certficate?0 comments | post comment |

MatStu Night Thursday, June 17
Dear Adult Students,
You're invited to participate in our second annual Mature Student Night on Thursday, June 17. The event begins at 8:00PM at the historic and cozy Hugh Foster Hall (150 Mary Street in downtown Milton).
You will have the opportunity to perform with your instructor or as a soloist. It will be a fun and relaxed environment for adult students to share what they've been studying recently. With no entry fee and no admission fee, MatStu Night is a great way to wrap up the school year.
Why should the kids have all the fun?! Confirm your spot with your instructor for Mature Student Night by June 12.
Benefits: Get to see Rick play something other than guitar or piano. (Guess what he's going to play!) Creates a snapshot of what you've been working on since you started private lessons. (Psychologically important!) Social, if you want. Networking, if you want. (Bring business cards...) Sets a good example for our kids. (Spring Concert Weekend will be 48 hours away) Get to hear other adults play. (You're not alone! 23% of our students are adults) Get to hear ideas for new songs. (If a student learned it with us, we can probably teach it to you.)
Notes:
Kids and friends are welcome to attend and cheer on the participants. Photography will be restricted. No alcoholic beverages will be served (on the premises, anyway...)

RIMS band rocks Milton's pro soccer debut
Congratulations to RIMS Monday night ensemble, $2 Bills, who kicked off Milltown FC's inaugral home game with a pre-game performance earlier this evening. The band entertained the good-natured, capacity crowd at Bishop Reding Secondary School. The national anthem was performed by studio teacher Scott Freer on trumpet. The game marked the debut of professional soccer in Milton, as part of the Canadian Soccer League's recent expansion.

Etiquette Notes from the Exam Venue Hosts
I was thinking of titling this article, "Proper Care and Feeding of Exam Venue Hosts," but decided that might have come across as sarcastic or hostile. So, Etiquette Notes will have to do.
Etiquette Notes from the Exam Venue Hosts
Welcome! Kindly check-in with a staff member or volunteer.
Space and sound levels permitting, we can offer you a warm-up room. Please respect the equipment in these areas.
As hosts, we have no influence on the exam results, reports, or certificates. We are only donating the use of space and certain equipment. The LCM/RGT will mail candidates or teachers exam results. Certificates will arrive in their prescribed timeframe.
The examiner will not provide feedback about the exam today. Further, the examiner is not in a position to comment on administrative or policy matters. Kindly refrain from moving furniture as they may be positioned for a specific purpose.
We may be able to lend certain items, such as footstools, but we also sell musical products, such as picks, books, and strings.
A second washroom is located down the hall.
Remember that a permit is required to use a handicapped parking space.

Preparing for the 20th Milton Music Festival
Whether you're participating in the upcoming Milton Music Festival on electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass, drums, or trumpet, keep in mind my favourite advice: focus on making the best music you can, and don't forget you took lessons. 0 comments | post comment |

Teacher's Recommendations sheets
Look for a yellow sheet from your teacher or School Director this week. It will include important suggestions about programming choices for 2010-2011. Pre-Registration is coming up, and these recommendations influence scheduling.
We still have events remaining in 2009-2010, such as the Spring Concert Weekend, but you teacher will provide direction for next September-June. This might include performances, examinations, and workshops. It also may include recommended length of lessons, such as 45 or 60 minutes. From my own perspective, some students are operating at maximum bandwidth! With ensembles, exams, and festivals, some students need either more private lesson time or less demands.
Our instructors received clear and direct instructions that these recommendations are to be guided by the students' best interests alone. All TRs are reviewed by the School Director.

RIMS ensemble competes in Steeltown
Congratulations to our Wednesday night ensemble (read: rock band), "Flaming Pork," who recently competed at a music festival at the Hamilton Convention Centre.
The band competed in the intermediate pop combo category alongside bands from Niagara Falls and London. The band gave it their all in two instrumental selections, even surviving a broken bass string. You have to love that intensity!
It was experience for us and our first time entering a band in the annual event. A special thanks to staff member Dan Willer and the committed parents of our young musicians.
The next appearance for Daniel (bass), Keenan (guitar), Robert (guitar), and Harrison (drums), will be at the Milton Music Festival on Wednesday, May 12.

Pre-Registration dates coming in May
Want to get the ideal time slots and instructors for your music lessons in 2010-2011? Current students are given first choices during Pre-Registration weeks Monday, May 3 through Saturday, May 15.
We're a growing studio. We can accomodate siblings, and students taking lessons on multiple instruments. Perhaps it looks like this: Meagan for voice lessons on Tuesday at 6:30, followed by drums 7:00, while brother Alex prepares for his electric guitar exam from 6:30-7:30. What a time saver! (Even if it only means a more relaxed pace at the new Tim Horton's nearby.)
Pre-Registration Week makes it possible. Contact our Call Centre at 905-864-1775.0 comments | post comment |

String Change Week 2
Since we recommend students of guitar have fresh strings at least twice a year, we built in String Change Weeks into our studio calendar. Our second of the year begins Monday, April 19.
Recently, guitar students were offered yellow SCW order forms. These forms will be collected and string changes will be scheduled, in an effort to minimize "down time" away from familiar frets. In many cases, we can have strings changed by a qualified staffer while students are in their lessons. We think this is a great time saver.
Even if you have a new instrument, you may want to participate in April, knowing that you're certain to be due for a change when we offer our services again in October.

Getting the most out of private music lessons
I wish students would directly ask this question more often: How can I get the most out of my music lessons?
Here are some tips for getting the most out of your private music lessons:
Stay engaged during class. When a recording is being played, don't watch the video or look around the room - read the sheet music in front of you and mentally follow along. The same kind of focus is essential during a demonstration, either by recorded example or the teacher's performance.
Think with ink. Be sure your actual assignment is written down with a due date. This also gives you a chance to confirm your next guitar lesson, piano lesson, etc.
Use our resources. Ask for handouts from workshops, recommended videos, etc. Visit our website! We sell the books we during lessons, so consider making that investment.
Pack your gear the night before. Getting organized beats having to ask to borrow (who knows how icky) 5As for your drum lessons. Don't mention your mom, she's done enough just driving you here. BTW, if I "lend" you a guitar, return the favour by buying a handful.
The time with the teacher is the tip of the iceberg. Here's hoping you get the most out of the other 167.5 hours each week.

Guitars by Vintage arrive
March is the month that comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. That's way more lyrical than a declaration on relative humidity. Still, the weather is warming and it makes some sense to have acoustic guitars delivered to the showroom.
If you're looking to take the For Sale sign off a solid spruce top jumbo acoustic guitar, then drop by a play a few chords on the VEC380 from Vintage guitars. Jumbo top with a shallow body for superb comfort. Flamed maple back and sides and Shadow pickup.
Also, check out another solid top, the V300BL. It's a folk size acoustic, so again, it's comfortable for all. We have a powder blue model in stock, so I don't think our sales staff will have to point it out! For the record, it's in honour of the original team colour of Sidney Crosby's employer. Thank you, Team Canada!0 comments | post comment |

Rock band program hits the road
Rick Imus Music Studio announces that one of its ensembles, Wednesday's rock outfit, "Flaming Pork," will compete in the 20th annual Hamilton Music Festival next month. The four piece group consist of two guitarists, a bass player, and a drummer, aged 12 to 15.
It was a somewhat spontaneous decision on my part, but there seems to be an enthusiastic response to the idea of travelling to perform. I'm not surprised as some of the musicians will put the "ham" in Hamilton. I hope they'll continue to enthusiastic after they hear they have to bring their own guitar amps and P.A. gear! Seriously, they're troopers (with great parents). It will be the first of two festival performances for FP this spring.
The ensemble program augments private lessons for selected students at our studio.

Exam season opens
What's new this performance exam season? As the due date for entries and cheques at the studio approaches (Monday, March 8) let's view what's new and what different about applying for exams.
Acoustic guitar: An increasingly popular choice for young candidates. No improvisation requirement, fingerstyle study OR repertoire melody section, low expenses for study materials.
Electric guitar: Still an exciting choice. The new handbooks, which contain the entry forms, have a space for parents to sign. Many candidates have seen their expenses decrease this year because the lead playing book/CD and rhythm/strumming studies book encompasses grades 3-5. For example, a candidate who passed grade three last year only needs to purchase a grade four handbook.
Drums: First full year with the new curriculum (2009). Convenient two grades with selected recordings per book.
Location: We're on track again to have an examiner come to Milton. Keep those cheques and entry forms coming!
Your teachers are always studying. Two of our guitar teachers will be candidates. I'll be a first time candidate for a drum kit exam! Guess I should book drum lessons for myself. There's a staff discount, but still a three month minimum! 0 comments | post comment |

Ensembles Buzz
It was controlled chaos for the early part of the evening, but well worth it in the end. Congratulations to our participating ensembles who participated in the 75 minute concert on Thursday in Milton.
Our bands performed a staple surf guitar tune, an instrumental of a classic rock hit by the Doors, and, my personal favourite, the former theme from TV's, "The New Music".
Honourary mention to our friends from 820 Chris Hadfield Air Cadets, who performed two pieces from their repertoire.
We decided to go direct to a PA board this time, instead of separate amps for guitars, bass, and drums. The mix resulted in a better experience for the audience. I saw some great examples of leadership backstage and on stage - now that the notes are taking care of themselves, it's good to see the young men growing in other areas.

Music Literacy and why it's included in our music lessons
The term "music literacy" has replaced the term "music theory" at our studio over the past five years. The thinking is, literacy has a fluency or practicality to it, while theory, though noble, seems separate from the performance of music.
Music literacy can certainly include language skills, such as Da Capo al Fine meaning "from head to finish", but more useful to our students are topics such as intervals and harmony, standard notation reading, and ear training. I like the way my colleague Benn introduces music literacy: Here's how music works...
As providers of private music lessons, it's important to stage the benefits of literacy in our students. It's a much more efficient way of studying music than any "put your finger here" approach. Concepts applied in song one should not be lost in songs two through 200.We don't stop the active playing (which is fun!) during a guitar lesson, for example, but sensibly work it in to the conversation so that students get the most out their lessons. 0 comments | post comment |

How a Music Student Centre welcomes Milton Newcomers
The seventh habit in Stephen Covey's bestseller, "Seven Habits of Highly Succesful People" is "Sharpen the Saw". As we celebrate our 30 month anniversary in our current space at 420 Bronte Street South, we assigned Scott Freer the task of repainting areas in need. Mmmm, fresh paint....
Look for the relocation of the jungle plant in the North window. It was a gracious gift by one of our A list parents when we first opened, but now that the place has filled in, it's time to bid it farewell.
A permanent, suitable for Canadian winters, sign is coming to an exterior wall near you. It's going to look great at night. Probably a good time to submit a resume if you're a great person who teaches guitar lessons, piano lessons, or drum lessons. (Nobody's leaving - but some of our faculty are at maximum bandwidth.)
Why not a new website while we're at it?

2nd Annual Milton Composition Festival
Sharpen up your pencils and right brains, it's time to enter the Milton Music Festival, which runs from Monday, January 25 to Saturday, February 6. The second annual event will be hosted by Milton Music Lessons at Rick Imus Music Studio and will be adjudicated by songwriter and recording artist Ben Pelchat.
Open to all music students who reside or study in Milton. Compositions may be vocal or instrumental. Each composer / group may enter a maximum of two pieces. Entries may be submitted in standard notation or as recorded performances.
Entries will be classified by the Festival Committee and evaluated by the Adjudicator.
Awards will be presented on Saturday, February 13.
Tips for students: Work on rhythms, such as are found in Ted Reed's book, Syncopation. Get your private music lesson teacher to help. They're not permitted to generate or overly shape the composition, but they edit, arrange, and notate your musical ideas. Younger students (ages 5-7) may want to submit short percussion compositions (four - right bars, rhythms only)
This year, entries are free - so let's hear those masterpieces, Milton!

2010 Milton Music Festival guitar adjudicator's bio
Get busy, boys and girls. The doctor is making a house call in May. You don't want to miss your chance to perform for, and get feedback from, a guy who's played around the globe. Get ready to enter the 2010 Milton Music Festival. We'll collect our studio's entries at the end of January and submit them for you. Let's get all those guitar lessons and practise sessions to pay off by winning a few medals. Go team!
Here's a sample of the bio on the 2010 Festival guitar adjudicator, Dr. Alvin Tung:
Alvin Tung has established himself as one of Canada's most brilliant virtuosi by securing numerous first prizes in many different competitions across North America. His honours have included winning the silver medal at the prestigious Tokyo International Guitar Competition, becoming the first Canadian in the thirty five year history of the competition to ever win a prize. He is also a two time consecutive first prize winner of the Canada Council National Grant Competition and Canadian National Music Competition (CMC).
Tung gave his solo recital debut at the age of twelve. Since then, he has performed across Canada, the United States and the Far East as a recitalist, a chamber musician as well as an orchestral soloist. His performances have been critically acclaimed by the press and public alike: “A miracle in guitar playing.” – (Sing Tao Daily, International), “. . . his expressiveness made the guitar sing.” – (Gendai Guitar, Japan), “Alvin Tung is undoubtedly one of the world's most brilliant young guitarists.” – (Classical Music, Taiwan). His live performances are often recorded for broadcast on major radio and television networks across Canada, the United States and Asia. He has also enjoyed equal praise and success as a recording artist. With three CD recordings to his credit, the two most recent discs have already sold out across Canada.
Alvin Tung has appeared as concerto soloist with orchestras across Canada, the United States, and Asia. Highlights in his career have included appearing as guest soloist with the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra to inaugurate the grand opening of the Living Arts Centre. In addition, he has made recital and chamber music debuts at the Glenn Gould Studio, the George Weston Recital Hall, Roy Thompson Hall, Muskoka Lakes and Ottawa Chamber Music Festivals and the Taipei International Guitar Festival. Concerts this season include an extensive tour with stops in Manitoba and Ontario with violinist Steven Tsitsos, where they will perform One Night Stand, a program of tangos and Latin inspired music. Shortly after will follow a lengthy concert tour in Mexico where Tung will perform Joaquin Rodrigo's beloved Concierto de Aranjuez. Rounding out the season, he will record his fourth CD and perform the Western Suite, a concerto for guitar and orchestra by American composer Christopher Fazzi which he gave the Canadian premiere.

Winter Concert Weekend
Congratulations to the students who performed Winter Concert Weekend! We had a surprise bumper crop this year. There were too many performers for one night to hold. Special thanks to those who made the shift to Saturday night. I couldn't help but notice all the performances were wonderful. Now that we're offering vocal lessons, it was good to hear a couple of singers make their debut.
We try to improve these events everytime. That's why your feedback on the December survey is so important. Taking a few moments to complete a survey is an easy investment in future special events and music lessons. They're designed to be anonymous, so feel free to be honest. We appreciate your responses. Surveys will be collected December 18.0 comments | post comment |
